What you need
- Graph paper or paper with hand-drawn grids
- A dark marker
- Scissors for adult use
Set up
Draw a simple black-and-white block picture on a square grid: a face, arch, letter, or symmetrical shape. Make a second, larger copy and have an adult cut it into four equal square tiles. Keep the uncut picture as the model.
How to play
Mix and rotate the four tiles. Study the model, then rebuild the picture by moving one tile at a time. Look for black squares that continue across an edge, corners that belong together, and parts that need a quarter-turn.
When the picture matches, one player closes their eyes while the other changes two tiles. Open your eyes, find what moved, and repair the picture. Take turns scrambling and solving.
Begin with a bold, symmetrical design and keep every tile facing up. For a harder puzzle, use an asymmetrical picture or turn the model face down after studying it.
